Note that these are real-time data and are not quality-controlled. Long-range graphs are plotted from a randomised subsample of half-hourly data.

Additional Information

 Wave buoy location  50° 37.36' N  002° 24.85' W
 WMO code  6201007
Approximate water depth  10.6 m CD
Approximate spring tidal range  2 m
 Storm alert threshold  2.11 m
 Met station location   50° 34.21' N  002° 27.31' W

Wave data are recorded using a Datawell Directional WaveRider Mk III buoy. The buoy was deployed on 18 December 2006, at which time the magnetic declination at the site was 2.9° west, changing by 0.15° east per year. Wave direction is reported following the nautical convention, meaning that the direction is where the waves come from, measured clockwise from magnetic north.

The Portland meteorological station was first installed on 01 January 2007. The original OMC instrumentation was swapped out for a Vaisala WXT536 in June 2019.

18/02/2016 The temperature processing required an update which has now been applied and readings are believed to be correct again.
11/02/2016 Following today's scheduled service the buoy appears to have started giving erroneously high temperature readings. All other readings are realistic but the buoy will be closely monitored and revisited if wave parameters become affected.
11/01/2016 Data stream appears to have stopped due to network works in the shore station area.
05/11/2015 There appears to be an issue with the receiving antenna at the shore station affecting the data feed for Chesil and Weymouth wave buoys. The site will be visited as soon as possible to rectify the issue.
15/07/2015 Buoy now re-deployed
09/07/2015 Scheduled service. Due to issues with HF connection the buoy had to be recovered for further tests.
29/05/2015 No data currently as the sailing centre at Weymouth are undertaking work on their internet connection and have switched off all power to their server room where the shore station is located
